At We Ship It, OBVIOUSLY we are constantly reading or watching something! We are obsessors...the ones who can’t get enough of fantasy tales, romantic storylines, and plot twists! And we know many of you are the same!
2020 has been a tough year for all of us...but one thing is for certain...we have learned to appreciate things that we previously took for granted. One of those things, for us, was the escape of a good book! There were many books and series’ that kept us wanting more this year, but here are our TOP FIVE!
1. The Memory of Things by Gae Polisner
We were lucky enough to get the chance to sit down with Gae for an episode, and reading The Memory of Things was such an important moment for us. Memory of Things is a great depiction of young love, and it also does an amazing job of exploring how we deal with tragedy. This book expresses the national heartbreak we all felt on 9/11 in such a heartfelt and relatable way. We truly recommend reading this book if you haven’t yet!
2. Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
This book kept us on our toes...OVER and OVER again! Owens does a fantastic job of building characters that you want to know inside and out...and her elaborate development of Tate and Kya was exquisite. I’ve never felt both so far and so near to a story in my life. And of course, there is an element of mystery too!
3. Cinder by Marissa Meyer
We LOVED ending our year with Cinder...such a thrill...and the wonderful Marissa Meyer was such a joy to sit down with! This is a true BINGE-READ! We planned to read just Cinder for our episode with Marissa, but honestly ended up reading the whole series in a week. If you enjoy the thrill of science fiction and fantasy...or if you love those passionate relationshippy moments, The Lunar Chronicles is for you!
4. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Okaaay...this may have been a Steph pick...and we've read it before. But it's still a classic that we loved reading! Jane Eyre tends to be a long read...and it takes effort to get through, however, it is SO worth it! The book has a similar style to Victorian...and captures that kind of romance and the sublime…while adding a darker twist. Jane is one of the most morally upright character we have read...and OH Rochester! Give it a go...or a re-read if you can!
5. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins!
We love all things Hunger Games obviously! How fortunate we are that Hunger Games fans get another tale years later. This was, of course, a different story than our original trilogy, but it gives so much background. The same drama and gripping story-telling grace this story. Hunger Games fans, this one’s for you!
And, there you have it! Those were our favorite reads of 2020...now on to 2021! We wish you all the safest and happiest new year...and we can only hope the world continues returning to normal each day. Either way, we will continue reading...and we look forward to your recommendations to keep us dreaming, loving, and laughing this year!
